I came from Fairfield University in Connecticut and quickly found UNLV familiar and comfortable.
When I was working on my Ph.D. at the University of South Carolina, the university was growing a lot, and I like being in that environment.
Shedding Light
We tend to think of slaves as field workers and servants. My research focuses on the history of slaves in the seas. I am now preparing a book manuscript from my 2005 dissertation, Enslaved Swimmers and Divers in the Atlantic World, 1444–1888. No scholar has written anything extensive on maritime slavery.
